It's great to be in the Sunshine State!

Fifty-three years ago -- on June 6, 1966 -- IT SNOWED where I was living in Casper, Wyo., and that's the day I made the final decision to move to Florida, and not much later, I set up residence in the Sunshine State, and I've never been inclined to move elsewhere.

Ya well I'm at the airport heading to Las Vegas baby!!!!!
Dear sevenpin63:

I hope you have a great time in Las Vegas.

As for me … been there, done that. I went to high school in Boulder City, 20 miles south of Las Vegas. My first newspaper job was with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, and I got married in Las Vegas. Even after moving to Florida, I've probably made at least 25 trips to Las Vegas (including a number in connection with national tournaments there and in Reno.

Again ... have a great trip!

Glad you enjoy FL. I just can’t let my wife see this.
Where in FL are you? Do you worry about storms.

Dear livespive:

I've lived in Sarasota (on the west coast) since 1966. As for storms (I assume you mean hurricanes), there has only been one direct hit (Abby in 1968, which was barely hurricane strength) and one semi-direct hit (Irma, which passed fairly close to the east of us in 2017).

Some people think that Florida is hammered by hurricanes every year, but that's hardly true. Since 2005, only three hurricanes have impacted the state, and we had nine consecutive years where no hurricane came close to Florida. Having said that, we always have to be aware of the possibility of a major storm, and this month, we'll be stocking up a central closet as a "safe room" should a big storm come alone and threaten our area.
