College Football

Well it appears most conferences are only going inter conference this year. Many out of conference rivalries won't be played.

Of course if we even get there. My guess is the season will be cut short.

You’re right. I wonder, when it gets down to it, if they’ll even start. I heard today that some college is having the freshmen players report but “ participation is optional “

Well, some players opting out already.

I know this won't be a hot take, but we have millionaires who don't want to play prom sports. Full ride college athletes who don't want to play. It's all over ESPN. Yet we have college students working in all sorts of businesses where the exposure to the virus is just as great. Let's be real here. It's all about optics and not player safety. Pro players who opt out shouldn't get paid. College players opting out lose their athletic scholarship or at the very least have to maintain an academic scholarship. No one in the media or ESPN talking about students who are working to afford college.

For sure, we're in the midst of situations apart from the norm, and there are a lot of key decisions involving college football yet to come.

Would it really be such a tragedy if no “student-athlete” did the athlete thing this year? That they did the full time student bit? Yes, Las Vegas might suffer, but I can live with that.

Dear bbfreeburn:

I've always been a sports fan, but I agree completely with your above-quoted post.

I have zero problem with that as long as they are on an academic scholarship.

The reality is most players can't cut it on an academic scholarship.

Why should a C average athletes be on scholarship when C average students either go in debt or work jobs.

Djarum, in case you missed the subtext, it was that once exposed to the reality of actual academic work there are at least some of these “scholar” athletes who would be found deficient.

SHOULD THE ATHLETIC SCOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS HAVE TO MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE THAT WAS COVERED BY THE SCOLARSHIP?

Dear bbfreeburn (and others):

In addition to what you've said, I'm going to refer to a situation, and I'm sure there are many, many other such happenstances.

During my tenure as sports editor of the Casper (Wyo.) Star-Tribune, I was allowed to sit in on a meeting on the University of Wyoming campus, and part of the discussions involved a superstar Wyoming athlete, who went on to a professional career.

However, the athlete was allowed to remain in school, even though he was actually academically ineligible. And even though I was present (and they knew I was a newspaper columnist), I didn't print anything about it because they made it clear that if I did print the information, they would all firmly deny it.

I took full notes, which I still have to this day, and I have the names of the professors who gave the athletes "B" and "C" grades, although they should have been "F", and I also know which university officials were ordering and/or pressing the professors to change the actual grades upward. But this was in 1965, and I didn't have a recording device with me, so without the availability of proven facts, unlike some journalists, I didn't even consider printing the facts as I knew them.

And I have no doubt that there are (and have been) many other such situations involving star athletes on campus.

HERE IS A FUNNY, BUT MAYBE NOT, STORY FROM 1974. I WAS ON A FULL RIDE BASEBALL SCOLARSHIP TO TEXAS TECH. WE HAD AN INTERLEAGUE GAME AT THE SCHOOL. AFTER THE GAME, 1 OF THE ASSISTANT COACHES CALLED ME OVER TO A LOWER LEVEL SEATING AREA. HE SAID THERE WAS A GENTLEMAN THAT NEED TO SPEAK TO ME, I ASSUMED A BASEBALL FAN. WE TALKED FOR A FEW MINUTES. THEN HE SAID "YOU DONT RECOGNIZED ME DO YOU". ME "SORRY, NO SIR".
HIM "OTHER THAN BASEBALL, I DONT RECOGNIZE YOU EITHER". ME "SHOULD I"? HIM "CONSIDERING YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE IN MY 11:30 TO 1:30 ECONOMICS CLASS, WE SHOULD KNOW EACH OTHER". I NEVER ATTENDED THE CLASS, THERE WAS SOMEONE IN THERE THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO ANSWER IF HE EVER TOOK ROLL OR CALLED ON ME. I WONT MENTION ANY NAMES, ALTHOUGH MOST ARE NOT AROUND ANYMORE, BUT THERE WERE SEVERAL PEOPLE THAT KNEW FROM DAY 1. BUSTED!!!!!!

AW, my wife was the student conduct board at a large public university. As Tom Petty said, “oh the stories she could tell.” At least some of the administration seemed to think athletes should be held to, shall we say, a different standard.
But here’s a nice story abou good prevailing. I was in the office of a friend, an English professor just bsing and the star basketball player came to his door.
, after not being seen for most of the semester, “Dr. John”
He said,”is there any way I can pass the course?” John smiled and said, “Not a chance in hell.” Basketball player laughs and said he didn’t think so.
