The historic agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates brokered by the Trump administration is an important step toward peace in the Middle East. The UAE will join Egypt and Jordan as the only Arab countries to open diplomatic relations with the Jewish nation. Here's the full text of an article that appeared in The Wall Street Journal ...

Israel, U.A.E. Agree to Establish Formal Diplomatic Relationship

By Felicia Schwartz

TEL AVIV—Israel and the United Arab Emirates agreed Thursday to establish a formal diplomatic relationship, a dramatic shift brokered by the U.S. that helps cement Israel’s warming ties with Gulf Arab states.

"The historic diplomatic breakthrough will advance peace in the Middle East region and is a testament to the bold diplomacy and vision of the three leaders and the courage of the United Arab Emirates and Israel to chart a new path that will unlock the great potential in the region,” said a joint statement from Israel, the U.S. and the U.A.E.

Israel has ties with Egypt and Jordan but the U.A.E. is the first Gulf Arab state to announce formal relations with Israel. The Gulf Arab states have historically held off doing so amid Israel’s long-running conflict with the Palestinians. But in recent years Israel and several Gulf states have been brought closer together through shared enmity with Iran, which they see as destabilizing the region.

As part of the announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed not to go ahead with a pledge to annex parts of the occupied West Bank, which had drawn fierce criticism from Arab states and Europe. The Arab states and Europe say any move to unilaterally annex areas Palestinians claim for a future state would permanently dash hopes for the creation of a Palestinian state side by side with Israel.

Israeli and Emirati officials will meet in the coming weeks to sign a range of bilateral agreements.

"What we see today is a new Middle East,” Brian Hook, the U.S. State Department’s special envoy for Iran, said at the White House on Thursday.

The deal will be called the Abraham accord, U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman said at the same White House event. President Trump joked he wanted to call the deal the Donald J. Trump accord but that the news media wouldn’t understand.

Dear WAMO:

Check your "sources" again, and then tell me what "fake news" is in the Wall Street Journal article.

To be honest, and full disclosure; I subscribe to WSJ and think they are one of the few remaining that are somewhat neutral in their reporting overall. Even their opinion section seems to give equitable time to opposing viewpoints.

AW. #4 TELLS YOU EXACTLY WHAT IS FAKE IN THE WSJ ARTICLE.

WSJ SAYS NETANYAHU "AGREED NOT TO GO AHEAD WITH THE ANNEXATION." THAT IS NOT TRUE. OR FOR A BETTER TERM, FAKE NEWS. CARRY ON GOOD BUDDY.

THEY MAY BE THE BEST 9. BUT IT JUST GOES TO SHOW THAT EVEN THE GOOD GUYS CAN GET SOMETHING WRONG. BUT WHEN SOMETHING GETS WRITEN AGAINST CERTAIN PEOPLE, ITS CALED FAKE NEWS. SO, IT CAN WORK BOTH WAYS.

Dear WAMO:

Your comments indicate that you have no conception of what is true or false with regard to the issue. Again, what SPECIFICALLY is "fake news" in the posted WSJ article?

Don't know if WSJ is the best, and I don't claim they are perfect, but they're definitely better than most.

As for ANY deal in the mid east, everything is constantly "on the table". Even signed treaties mean little in that region (not that the US has a spectacular record of abiding by promises either), but from what I've witnessed in my life, every "deal" and any "agreement" in the middle east is tenuous at best. Tomorrow a camel will fart and someone will get pissed off about it, and all deals are off.

Obama says Trump didn't build that.
The Dems are so trying hard to spin this.

For 8 years Obama and the Dems believed distancing from Israel would allow for peace, when no peace will exist in the middle east without Israel.

Kinda like the Feds pulling out from Portland. The violence would just go away, right?

"There is no change in my plan to apply sovereignty, our sovereignty, in Judea and Samaria, in full coordination with the U.S. I’m committed to it, this hasn’t changed. I was the one who put sovereignty in Judea and Samaria on the table. This issue remains on the table,” Netanyahu said at a news conference in Jerusalem after the agreement was announced."

Could be that wsj was published before the news conference.

Dear WAMO:

Here are some quotes from an article in THE WASHINGTON POST, so perhaps you can understand it better. And I've included a link to the entire story, should you care to read it (and try to comprehend it).

* It’s clear this was the only way to stop Israel's annexation of the territories in the West Bank allotted to it in the Trump plan.

* Crown Prince Mohammad bin Zayed and other Emirate leaders believe (probably correctly) that Israeli annexation would kill even the possibility of two states and Israeli-Palestinian peace.

* The UAE approached the Trump administration and offered formal peace with Israel in return for no annexation.

* Was normalization enough of a prize for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to prevent him from going ahead with annexation? Maybe, but note that he recently said "the issue of applying sovereignty (annexation) is in Washington." This was his way of telling his right-wing base that he could not go ahead with annexation if the Trump administration said no.

* But no matter the underlying motives, this normalization nevertheless represents an important contribution to peace-building between Arabs and Israelis. It stopped Israeli annexation, which would have likely ended the hope for two states.

LAST TIME. NETANYAHU HIMSELF SAID, AFTER THE AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED, "IT WAS NEVER MY INTENT TO PULL ANNEXATION OFF THE TABLE." "ANNEXATION IS STILL ON THE TABLE." THAT WAS AT 2:53 08/14/2020. DJ FOUND SOMETHING SIMILAR TO WHAT I FOUND. (PLEASE TRY AND COMPREHEND THAT) I DONT CARE WHAT WSJ OR TWP PUT IN PRINT. I AM QUOTING FROM THE HORSES MOUTH. BUT ISNT IT GOOD TO KNOW YOU CAN COUNT ON WSJ AND TWP TO SUPPLY YOU WITH THE SAME INFO? NOW YOU HAVE MORE SOURCES TO COUNT ON, OR CAN YOU? NOW, PLEASE MOVE ON GOOD BUDDY.

Dear WAMO:

So what exactly are you saying?

Are you contending that the agreement has no validity?

Are you saying that Netanyahu refuses to abide by the terms of the agreement?

Are you alleging that the posted articles are "fake news"?

All you really needed to say was that no peace will exist in the Middle East

... but even if people didn't engage in religion, there will never be peace.
This is true. I didn't mean to imply that religion is the only cause of war. Only that more people have been killed in the name of religion than any other cause. As long as there are conflicting religions there will never be peace.
