From what I've read, Petty offered him an ownership stake in PE to keep him. Rumors abound between him going to Hendrick in the 48, and Ganassi in the 42.

Someone in a comment board said something about Michael Jordan buying into a team, so maybe he'd go there. I haven't read anything about that from anyone with a reputable connection to the sport though.
