Fruit bats reproduction

Guest
Wanting to keep with the new rules of no bowling, no porn, and no personal info posted in this off ramp forum. How do fruit bats reproduce? The typical way other living organisms do? Interesting off ramp topic to discuss.

That was interesting, thanks Greg! First (and only) time I've seen fruit bats was a few years ago when we vacationed in Maldives. They are fairly large, and IMO look really cool. I enjoyed watching them fly around. Up to that point, we'd only seen the small bats flying around our backyard eating bugs. Those are neat to watch too - very quick and amazing what they can do in flight!

I've never been close enough to a bat to really check one out. The fuckers creep me out!! When I lived out of town a ways I used to get them in the house now and then. I became an expert at catching those pricks with a fishing net.

I haven't either - never held one or looked at one while someone else held one (think zoo). When we were out in the country I always enjoyed standing on our back deck watching the bats fly at dusk. We had about 6 at one time, but after the tornado came through it took a couple of years before we saw one out there again. The screech owls were cool to watch too, they were especially active for a few weeks before the young left the nest. There was an old birdhouse up in a tree they took over every spring. I think all but one year they were there. It was kinda funny... in the fall/winter, squirrels would use that birdhouse. It was big, designed to be 6 units, 3 on each side, but the squirrels had chewed out the interior walls making it one big nest. Anyway, in the spring after the squirrels left, the screech owls would move in. They were a mating pair - we'd see both in and out until the young were gone.

All they need is about a 3/8" gap. They flatten themselves out ans slide right in.

I grew up on the Delaware River. I have many memories of my parents and pets chasing down bats.

Bats are most excellent bug repellants. They'll eat a ton of mosquitoes daily. One of my neighbors has a bat house with a number of bats living in it, very few mosquitoes around here in the summer months. Last year was the first time I can recall not getting bitten even once out on my deck.

Being the new guy on the block, he was being "nice". Don't worry, it shouldn't be too long before he figures out where they hid his red crayons..

Bats are fascinating and what they do for the ecology cannot be understated. ONE bat can eat 600-1000 mosquitos in ONE HOUR! We need them. There is a potential disaster looming over the bat population of the U.S. It is called white nose syndrome. A fungus grows over a bat's nose, spreads to its ears and wings. It eats their skin. They wake up more often in winter during hibernation causing them to burn up their fat reserves and die. It is highly contagious and whole bat caves are being wiped out. It affects bats that hibernate with is 50% of all species. European bats seem to be immune so scientists are looking at them for a cure.
It would seem that stem cells could be used. I wouldn't know how to distribute the cure, tho.
