Regardless of political persuasion, everyone -- especially taxpayers -- should be angered by the "slush fund" used, in part, to cover up sexual misdeeds by members of Congress.
It has recently been disclosed that more than $17 million in taxpayer dollars have been used since 1997 to "shield" members of Congress from a myriad of problems including sex-related allegations.
The fund, administered by the Office of Compliance, has been well-hidden from public view, but American taxpayers have every right to know where and how their money is being spent.
Some pertinent questions need to be answered, such as who authorized this fund to begin with, who has managed the fund, who has authorized the payments, and how much and to whom payments were disbursed. Also, importantly, full disclosure is needed as to which members of Congress used the funds to cover misdeeds.
Going further, all such moneys spent should be reimbursed to the government by the individuals, and the fund should be eliminated immediately.
Members of Congress are elected to champion the rights of Americans and to better the lives of our countrymen, and there is no place for a taxpayer-funded slush fund to cover up their personal problems. It's no wonder that Americans have extremely low opinions of Congress.
