I witnessed the sad, cruel demise of a personal friend and newspaper co-worker, Richard Brooks, who succumbed to that disease four years ago. And I'll never know how he maintained such strong mental fortitude to the bitter end, even though he had gone from an active, vibrant individual to a person whose body had deteriorated in so many ways.
