Hi Scolai, I thought you might have been lost in the shuffle. I was curious, what style of karate do you study?

My kids and I started Isshinryu three months ago. We just promoted to yellow belt last Saturday.
Outstanding! Where are you and who is your instructor? (PM the info if you prefer).

You're setting off on an awesome journey. I've been training for 6 years in this style. I prefer Isshinryu's functional system to the clunkier style I trained in college.

Congratulations on earning your new rank!

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it! My Dojo is Championship Karate Studio in Sugar Grove, Illinois. My instructors are Grand Master Ron Troutman, And Master Rocky Troutman. We have really enjoyed the last three months, and are looking forward to training for our orange belt promotions. I agree that Isshinryu is much more functional than other styles that I have seen. the movements are more compact, and harder to block.

So what kata does your school teach first? I know that some start with Sanchin; we start our students with Seisan. We don't teach Sanchin until Sankyu - brown belt.

Seisan kata is the first kata taught at our school. To be promoted we needed to demonstrate 1)15 basic upper body techniques
2)12 basic kicks
3)10 basic self defense techniques
4)Empi exercise
5) Seisan kata
Now we will begin to introduce imi into Empi, and Seisan. After that , we will begin learning the Seiuchin kata. Sanchin kata isn't taught until you reach brown belt at our school either.

Interesting. I've a few questions for you:
1 - 15 UB basics I've got. They're probably like our own, but for numbers 11 & 12 (I assume you're doing the block 5-punch combo there), where do you target the punches?
2 - we have 9 basic kicks in our chart. I'm wondering what your 3 additional kicks are. Ours are:
mae geri (front kick), yoko geri (side kick), mawashi geri (round kick), uchiro geri (back kick), mae kake geri (heel thrust kick), yoko-mae geri (side-front kick), fumikomi geri (heel stomp kick), hisa geri (knee), and kensetsu geri (angle kick). You have 3 more?
3 - Our Sensei uses kata as self-defense. Not that we never work other SD techniques, but they're not incorporated into our tests.
4 - Not familiar with this. Do tell!
5 - Seisan - probably similar (if not identical) to ours

1) These are seiken punches targeted to the sternum. The first is a downward block, and the second is a mid-block.
2)We have a koshi geri (jump front kick),a kakato tsuki geri , and sokuto geri (forward kick w/blade of foot)
3)These are block/ punch,block/ kick, multi-block/strike combinations that are practiced at each lesson. There are forty total,
and they are a part of each promotion.(10 for yellow belts, 15 for orange belts, 20 for purple belts, etc.)
4) I assume that our Seisan is at least similar. At our last tournament I saw students from other dojos perform Seisan, and it was nearly identical.
