Hunker down

Wish you best of luck ~9.

We have a basic/decorative wood burning fireplace, and while its purely there for aesthetics, it will at least give us some heat if the power ever goes out here. I also have a Buddy Propane heater I use for the garage sometimes, but its really not designed for indoor use. We had tornados back in 2011 that took out power for us at our old apartment for about a week. Luckily temps were about 40 in the evening with high 60's during the day.

Saw where Californians where pointing at Texas over power outtages where Ted Cruz made some comment about their grid a few years ago.

The difference, of course, is that California has rolling brown outs and outtages all the damn time because they wanted to go green and borrow most of their energy from other states. This is, what, a once in a 100 year event for Texas?

No generator. I should have one - and have thought about the generac units since gasoline is hard to come by during hurricanes. Just never done it.

We just had power come back 30 mins ago. Not sure how long we'll have it since another icing event expected tonight. Hope we can get the house up to temp so we have some runway to ride out another day or two if needed.

We're west of Houston, and WAMO is west of Ft. Worth. They're getting it worse than we are. But Dallas usually gets some cold and ice each winter - we don't.

And yeah, it's been a long time since it's been this cold here. 100 year winter storm. 1000 year flood event (Harvey). All in the last 5 or so years. Unbelievable.

We are somewhat lucky that the state as a whole here is divided by several power companies. TVA is who keeps our lights on and its billed through our local utility company that does water. I think Alabama Power does the south half of the state.

Many utility companies were reducing reserve capacity as homes and electronics were becoming more effecient. The problem with that is in teh next 10 years the demand will be higher as we go to electric vehicles.

Also coming out, majority of ERCOT Board doesn't even live in Texas. One in Cali, one in Michigan, another even lives in Germany. No wonder...

IM IN MINEOLA, EAST TEXAS. IT WAS -2 LAST NITE. MORE OF THE SAME FOR ANOTHER DAY OR 2. STILL DRIVE TO WORK IN DALLAS 3 AND 4 DAYS A WEEK. I PAY A LITTLE EXTRA TO GET THE DALLAS DIRECTV PACKAGES. SINCE I STILL DRIVE IN TO WORK. I KNOW YA'LL DONT REMEMBER, BUT IM AN ELECTRICIAN. I OWN MY OWN ELECTRICAL BUSINESS. THE LAST 2 DAYS MY PHONE HAS BEEN RINGING OFF THE HOOK. ALOT OF FOLKS DONT GET THAT I CANT DO ANYTHING ABOUT POWER LINES OR INCOMING ELECTRICAL POWER FROM POWER COMPANIES. EVEN HAD BALLARD CALL. HE WAS ASKING ABOUT GENERATORS. TOLD HIM IT WOULD BE NEXT WEEK BEFORE HE COULD GET ANYTHING DONE. TOLD HIM TO TRY A MOTEL, HE SAID THEY ARE ALL BOOKED UP. HE SAID WINSTAR WAS THE CLOSEST WITH ROOMS. TOLD HIM TO PACK SOME CLOTHES AND GET GOING.
OVER 800k WITHOUT POWER IN THE DFW AREA.

MY INTERNET HAS BEEN DOWN. JUST CAME BACK UP.

Had to map it, for some reason I thought Mineola was the other side of DFW. Oh well, not the first time I've ever been wrong! :p

Not sure if our home internet is working, I've been on Verizon LTE this whole time with my phone. Speed has picked up today, it was slow as hell yesterday. Like dial-up slow at times.

One thing I did, quite old school, was actually DOWNLOAD movies to our tablets in case of LTE or internet went down. We got really lucky. Lots of power outtages just north and west of us due to ice. We hovered around 32/33 yesterday.

Well shit. The one water line I was concerned about being a problem is a problem. Water all over garage floor. If that's all, it'll be easy to access and fix. But, no water for the rest of tonight. :(

That sucks. We have pipes that come up through the slab on an exterior wall that is barely insulated that busted before we purchased the house. We make sure to run them good during sub 20 degree weather.

I always worry about our outside spigots. The pipes sit behind insulation but since the water doesn't run I could see them busting at some point. I wish they were ran separate with a shutoff in the garage.

When the temps get to the critical point just let the water trickle in the vulnerable spigots. Let them run til the temps rise.

Well that sucks, is it copper or PVC?
I suspect copper. Like Dj, I'm 99% sure the line runs in the slab and pops up at the spigot location. I just hope the burst isn't right at the base where it goes into the concrete. If I've got some pipe to work with, should be easy enough to resolve.

I hope it works out, if it's copper I hope you can solder. Personally I find PVC easier to work with. Also I think PVC handles the cold weather better.

I can't. If I have enough to work with, will cut it off and slap on a compression fitting and valve to close it off for short term. This cold snap is supposed to be over by the weekend. I can then reassess and book a plumber if needed after the glut of emergency water repairs are done.

If this is the only rupture, I can get by without that spigot for a while and be happy. Lady at work had a line bust in her attic... we have some up there too, but I think (hope) they are all OK. Have another cold night - and water is shut off. I drained all I could, hope it's enough.

Damn why would a builder put water pipes in the attic??
