So what happened? According to Earnhardt, he had just left the garage after making repairs to the car and forgot to check if the wheel was clicked into place. He was riding at pace car speed when it came off in his hand and he tried to steer the car himself.
“I couldn’t do it!” he said. “When it was on the asphalt, I couldn’t do (crap) because it was just spinning in my hand. That hurt like hell. But I was trying to stop it because it was going into the infield and it was going to hit the wall! As soon as it got on the grass, it was easy as hell. I was like, ‘Oh, hey! I can turn it!’”
Had to be scary, even under yellow that's still moving at Talladega.
