A drug trial in France has gone horribly wrong, leaving one healthy volunteer brain-dead and five others hospitalized, reports the New York Times. Details on what happened, including what type of drug was being tested and its manufacturer, probably won't be revealed until later Friday.

Deaths or serious adverse reactions during Phase 1 clinical trials — which focus primarily on a drug’s safety and side effects, rather than on its effectiveness — are rare.

I hate it for those guys, but... this is the price paid for these trials to ensure safety. Imagine if they didn't have these trials and something like this went out (inadequately tested) in bulk to the public.
