GOP movers and shakers need to wake up

The Republican Party needs to wake up before it becomes extinct. Many GOP movers and shakers seem to obsessively cling to "good old boys” candidates, and that's unlikely to be a winning formula in this year's presidential elections.

In debate after debate, poll after poll, and focus group after focus group, many Republicans and conservatives are flocking to plain-talking, no-nonsense candidates. Many people are tired of "establishment" candidates such as Jeb Bush, and they're fed up with do-nothing congressmen, including those on the Republican side of the aisle.

The GOP establishment needs some self-reflection. Many voters and would-be voters are turning a deaf ear to the same old party lines, and is it truly likely that they'd suddenly do an about-face and embrace the political correctness and hackneyed positions of the past?

Large numbers of people are sick and tired as business as usual, and they seem to yearn for a strong, decisive and effective leader who stands apart from the Washington crowd. And many are gravitating to Trump or Cruz for that reason.

Wouldn't it be nice to see more people running for high office who would do the following?

* tell Americans what they are for, instead of what is wrong with the opponents.

* demonstrate bipartisanship and vote for programs that make sense, rather than those that the party says to support.

* listen to polls and, regardless of personal opinions, work to achieve what Americans actually want.

* make a commitment that, for every dollar spent on campaign ads, a like amount will be donated to charitable causes..

I have felt strongly on those two points for quite a while now although I felt on the second point, vote for programs or issues that were best for the country instead of what was best for the party.
