I agree it's not all teachers' fault. One, parents don't discipline their kids anymore. Two, parents (and laws now) don't allow schools to discipline their kids anymore. Three, schools are operated more like for-profit businesses - they do anything they can to get butts in every seat every day to maximize funding from the state. Read up about truancy courts that now seem to be the "speed traps" to boost a school district's budget. Four, government meddling and pressure for "standardized" test scores means school districts are pushing teachers to teach for the test and not toward actually educating the students or teaching them critical thinking skills. My MIL is a retired teacher. She said of all things, the change in parents/home life/attitude that she saw in the last few years of her career is what made her job especially difficult. Bad parents = bad students. Towards the end, she said the kids were getting worse every year. She taught first or second grade, I forget which one.
