Mini-editorial: Why doesn't anyone ask this question?

There have recently been numerous press conferences with comments by Biden, the State Department and The Pentagon, and some of them include the opportunity for journalists to ask questions of those people. But no one seems to be concerned about Biden's suggestion that he may seek to extend the Afghanistan withdrawal deadline past Aug. 31.

The Taliban has threatened Biden that if the Americans aren't completely out of the country before Aug. 31, there will be significant consequences. Therefore, there are some questions that need to be asked, and no journalists seem to willing to ask them.

Key questions should be asked with regard to how the Americans can actually be completely out of Afghanistan by the end-of-August deadline. Regardless of the number(s) of people successfully boarding flights taking Americans and others out of Kabul, isn't it virtually impossible to meet the deadline?

Think about it. The U.S. military spokesmen claim they have no idea of how many Americans remain in the country, and neither do they claim to know how many Afghans who helped and supported the Americans -- with such things as translation -- are still in Afghanistan.

Also keep in mind that the out-of-Kabul flights won't be able to continue until the last minute, or even the last day(s). If the deadline is adhered to, the Karzai International Airport must be completely devoid of Americans (and its allies) by that time. And how would that be possible?

There have been thousands of additional U.S. military members sent to Afghanistan by Biden to assist the withdrawal effort, and all of them need to be factored into the number of people leaving the country, and all of the people currently securing the airport operations need to be flown out of Kabul as well.

Indeed, questions about the Aug. 31 deadline need to be answered, but no one seems willing to ask them?
