Thursday was a big day in the Town of Neversink, NY. A beer was consumed—legally, inside a restaurant.

Grahamsville resident Kenny Curry wore a blazer for the special event, as he was served the first beer sold in the Town of Neversink in 80 years. Eureka Market & Café owner Jennifer Grimes proudly poured Curry a bottle of Trout Town Eagle IPA from the Roscoe Beer Company as about 20 supporters cheered and applauded.

Prohibition ended in Neversink with the passage of two propositions in the November election that changed the town’s dry laws to allow beer, wine and liquor sales in restaurants and package stores. Grimes, who unsuccessfully pushed for new alcohol laws three years ago, said she started an application for a liquor license the day after the vote passed. They had to wait for the votes to be certified later in November, but finally got their liquor license a few days ago. The beer trucks came Wednesday, and the wine was delivered at 12:22 p.m. Thursday, just a few hours before the first drinks were served at 3 p.m.

Curry was a fitting choice for the first to be served a beer, because his father is thought to be one of the last to order a beer at a bar in Neversink, and Curry built the café’s building. His wife ran a restaurant called Carol’s Kitchen, and Curry ran an auto shop in the section of the building that now houses the beer coolers.
