Trump must send clear message to defiant 'sanctuary cities'

If so-called "sanctuary cities" refuse to enforce federal law, they shouldn't receive federal funding, and Congress should eliminate funding for cities that harbor and refuse to prosecute illegal immigrants.

It's ridiculous when American cities don’t allow police or government employees to inquire about a person's immigration status or they aren’t allowed to notify customs officials about the immigration status of people they encounter while on duty.

Following the election of Donald Trump, officials in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Seattle, San Francisco and other cities have reaffirmed their commitment to remaining sanctuary cities, even though Trump has vowed to cut federal funding to those cities as one of his first official actions upon taking office.

There is a horribly backwards double-standard with regard to immigration laws. The federal government places extreme pressure on cities and states on issues that deal with things such as religious liberty and election laws when such entities attempt to exercise and regulate rightful control. On the other hand, when it comes to immigration issues that are clearly within the purview of the federal government, "sanctuary cities" are allowed to get away with thwarting federal law.”

The Trump administration needs to send a clear message to sanctuary cities: if you don’t follow federal laws, you don’t get federal funding.

It is dangerous and unconscionable that so many cities across the country are allowed to blatantly ignore the rule of law while getting rewarded with taxpayer dollars. Therefore, Congress must act to protect this country from illegal alien criminals and demand that all U.S. cities and states enforce the laws.

It's become a non-issue with Bam Bam at the helm. Hopefully, Trump will hold them accountable.

My congressman, Rep. Vern Buchanan, had this to say about "sanctuary cities" (and this was just posted on his Web site ...

Vern Buchanan Wants Feds to Stop Funding Sanctuary Cities

Even as some local officials continue to say they will provide sanctuary to illegal immigrants, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., is calling on cutting federal funds to those cities.

Noting that ten of the largest sanctuary jurisdictions in the nation garnered $700 million in block grants this year, Buchanan showcased his support of two pieces of legislation on Wednesday: Kate’s Law and the Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act. Kate’s Law adds more penalties for illegals who are deported, return to America and are caught again. The Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act would cut off federal funds to cities that refuse to back federal immigration laws.

“Taxpayers should not be supporting cities that ignore federal law,” Buchanan said. “While we are a nation of immigrants, we are also a nation of laws. Our number one priority should be targeting criminals that are here illegally.

“Congress must act to protect Americans from criminals and make every state and city across the country enforce the laws on the books,” Buchanan added.

Noting that some of the nation’s largest cities were already talking about resisting incoming President Donald Trump’s call for tougher immigration laws, Buchanan, who sits on the House Ways and Means Committee, said Congress needs to push back by cutting the purse strings of sanctuary cities.

“Washington needs to send a clear message to sanctuary cities – if you don’t follow the laws, you don’t get federal funding,” Buchanan said. “It is dangerous and unconscionable that so many cities across the country blatantly ignore the rule of law and still get rewarded with taxpayer dollars.”

Since Trump’s election last week, mayors of large cities across the nation--including Bill de Blasio in New York City and Rahm Emmanuel in Chicago--have doubled down on their support of sanctuary for illegals.

I would go a step further than that. I would also propose a law that states that any city or municipality that fails to report to INS any immigrant (legal or otherwise) that is eligible for deportation due to the nature of the crime he was convicted of be financially liable for any damages caused by such person in the future. The purpose of this would be to allow a victim of a crime (or their surviving family) by a person who should have been deported but wasn't due to protection by a sanctuary city would be allowed to sue the sanctuary city and it's elected officials in Federal Court for damages caused by failure to follow Federal Law.

What Rob said, PLUS I think the Fed should withhold funding from the entire STATE if any city within fails to follow Federal laws.

That said, local Mary J taxation better be enough to offset the Fed $ loss in those states that have chosen to "legalize" it. Gotta apply the rule evenly/fairly.

Dear Robadat:

I would likewise endorse such proposals.
