If signing a marriage license as an agent of the state is a SUCH a sin, to the degree in which there is Hell to pay (literally), I struggle understanding how could you visit a place that has such fundamental theological differences.

There is actually quite a bit of question about this. Seems that no camera (of the hundreds that might have seen her) recorded Kim Davis entering the Papal embassy. We have only her word, as the Pope (or his representative) have made no comment. This whole "story" seems to be made of whole cloth cut by Kim Davis herself.
