Interesting this topic was posted. Last weekend a relative of mine was married and there were 6-7 people who did RSVP in advance and did not show. I will never in my life understand how or why this happens. They RSVP'd and simply did a no call/no show. They didn't even give a heads-up! I think it cost them something like $40-50 per plate, which isn't a ton I'll grant that, but it's the IDEA. If someone had something come up, I'd understand, but fuck.
