McCartney claims that the absence of portable recording devices during the band’s heyday meant that songs he co-wrote with Lennon were frequently forgotten the morning after.

I suppose most or all of you know the story of the Rolling Stones and "Satisfaction." It seems that Keith kept a tape machine near his bed. One night after his usual debauchery he came home and passed out. In the morning, on the machine, was the first few chords of the song. Seems he turned it on and played the song into it prior to passing out. Otherwise, he claims, he had no recollection of it at all.
